Private Lesson Frequently Asked Questions
Who is able to take lessons?
All students wishing to learn how to become a better servant to the art of music are welcome. It doesn't matter if you are a seasoned performer or a shower singer who has never learned to read music. There are lessons to be learned at every stage of artistic development, and each one is exciting, challenging and gratifying. If you've never taken a music lesson before now, don't panic! You will find a supportive, tailor-made environment that lends itself to personal success. Just remember that everyone can sing and/or learn an instrument; you aren't any different.
What can I expect?
- A truly professional atmosphere that is both challenging and supportive.
- High-quality instruction and guidance from a singer and teacher who was trained at the highest levels and who continues to perform at the
professional level.
- An HD video recording of every lesson so that you can not only hear the work we do, but see what we are doing as well. (If you supply your own SD Card, there is no charge. If you wish to receive your recordings electronically, there is an extra $5 fee per lesson.)
What if I don't read music?
Everyone has to begin somewhere. Just as we do not come out of the womb knowing how to communicate in our native language, we do not all know how to read music until we are taught. Music notation truly is another language - one that is rich in interpretation and meaning. It is because of this that I incorporate music theory (the art of reading, writing and understanding music) with everyone's lessons, regardless of the student's previous experience. If you have never learned to read music, I am more than happy to teach you this mode of communication. Even if you do know how to read music, there is always more to learn, so we will look at more advanced matters, such as composition and arrangement so that you can expand your knowledge base and have yet another outlet of your creativity and inspiration. Also, since everyone learns at different rates and in different ways, I will be sure to teach you these skills based on your own experience and needs.
How much will it cost me?
I offer both individual and group lessons. Regularly-scheduled individual lessons are given via a flat-rate tuition system. In this case, attendance is up to the student and I do not "pro-rate" for missed lessons. Here is the breakdown for both:
Individual Lessons
Half Hour: $120 per month
Full Hour: $200 per month
Group Classes (When Available) and Master Classes (Offered Seasonally)
Half Hour: $25 per person
Full Hour: $40 per person
Family Discounts
Families are ALWAYS welcome! There is a discount available for each additional family member who takes lessons or music theory tutoring. The more family members, the bigger the discount. Be sure to ask!
Cancellation Fee
Lesson attendance is up to the individual student. As the studio is very full with an active wait list, I ask that the student provides at least twenty-four (24) hours advance notice for cancellations. This allows me time to offer those times and/or slots to the individuals on the wait list.
In the case of group lessons and master classes, I charge a $10 fee per person should the cancellation occur less than 48 hours before the class.
Late Payment Fee
Payments are due at the beginning of either the first lesson of each month or the sixth of each month, whichever comes first. In other words, if you are not going to be at your first lesson, you must either pay at your previous lesson, mail a check, or pay online. Should your payment be received after 11:59 pm on the sixth of the month, a $15 late fee will be added.
How can I pay?
I accept cash, check, money orders and all major debit and credit cards. For further convenience, as well as to avoid late fees, I have an Online Marketplace where you can pay for your lessons from the comfort of your PC, iPad, Android, iPhone, or other device. Simply select the type of lesson and the duration (1/2 hour or hour) you which to take, add it to your cart, select the number of lessons you are going to take for the month or quarter, and then checkout! There is even an option to pay for digitally-delivered HD video recordings of your lessons. There is a flat-rate $5 processing fee for card transactions and for lessons purchased through the Online Marketplace.
